It's my fault she is this way. I wanted my children to have the best combination: American circumstances and Chinese character. How could I know these two things do not mix?

In America, nobody says you have to keep the circumstances somebody else gives you.

"The Joy Luck Club" feels like a collection of stories, or vignettes, held together by the members of the Joy Luck Club itself--a group of Chinese American immigrants in San Fransisco, California. The primary players are four mothers and their four daughters. They tell their stories of immigration and of the gaps created between the mothers and daughers--a generational gap as well as a cultural gap. These stories illustrate the difference between a mother's fantasy and her daugher's reality.

Very highly recommended reading for all mothers and daughters.
