it was amazing
bookshelves: for-harper-collins

I hereby predict that, sometime in the next year or so, the next big Young Adult obsession will be with the book , and with the subsequent books that I hope he writes quickly because I might die if I don't know the what and the why and the how and the...well, EVERYTHING. (This is apparently the first in a series of six books.)

I also predict that it will take off like the Harry Potter and the Twilight Series, with almost as many adults reading the series as kids.

For one thing, this book is creative genius. I can take a guess at some of Grant's inspirations, but I truly hope that my doing so doesn't take away from Grant's originality, because to me this book felt 100% new, and Grant is brilliant to have woven his ideas together in such a phenomenal way.

The story is this: everyone over the age of 15 disappears one day, all in the same instant. After the initial panic, a power struggle ensues (a la Lord of the Flies). But that's not all: it turns out that some of the kids have developed certain...let's say unique...skills (a la Heroes), which help and harm in their strange, adultless environment. The story surprises despite having some familiarity, and I simply couldn't put it down. I even once tucked it under my shirt and snuck it into the ladies' room at work with me so I could continue reading. Oh, and there's even some teen love in there, too, and who doesn't love young love? (No one, I tell you.)

I admit, the cover art and the summary on the book jacket are a little hokey. I can overlook the summary - after all, I thought the summaries for the Twilight series sounded ridiculous as well, so I think my distaste has more to do with my being in my thirties than anything else. That very well may be the same for the cover art, too, but I do think it will hinder the book's allure for adult readers. If you guys over at Harper Collins are reading this, you might want to consider ditching the random people on the book jacket and instead design it as it looks without the jacket on it (matte black with shiny blue title in large letters on the front). But that's just my two cents.

When it comes down to it, though, the book jacket art is pretty irrelevant. With or without it, this book kicks some serious ass. And you don't have to be a young adult to think so.

Michael That's very kind of you, thanks.

Erin You gotta love when the author himself comments on your book review!

Karina its a really great story, but i really don't think it will blast off like Twilight and Harry Potter did. I know it just came out, but I just don't see the blast part.

I hope I'm wrong though because everyone should deffinatly read this book.

Cathy I just put this book on hold at my local library.
I am totally digging your reviews!

Megan I think it should blast off like Twilight and Harry Potter, but unfortunately I have to agree with you, Karina - for some reason it hasn't as of yet. Personally I never really got into Twilight all that much, but I think that the general consensus seems to favour fantasy over sci-fi. People just don't appreciate good dystopian fiction anymore!

Hannah i agree totally with the review, i didn't find the jacket as irrelevant though, its the characters~ and it got my mom and little sister to look at it. now my mom is reading it too (I'm on Hunger by now~ so good)i do like the teen romance just because well, I'm a 13 year old girl; who dreams pretty much of nothing else (dun dun dun) great review, really liked.

Natasha Farro-York-Harnage Yeah I agree, peeps should stop caring for those serious cuze ma and all my friends love this book a lot. Here's four reasons why it's better than twlight:
1. There's no vampires or werewolfs
2. The dudes are wayyyyyyyy hotter
3. U dont have to worry bout them biting ur throats just with guns
4. If u make out with 1, u wont have to worry bout them killing ya

Melissa I actually threw my covers away. I agree the black book with shiny lettering looks a lot better than the cheesy covers. Especially to a fourty seven year old women. Awesome books by the way.

Shannon I LOVE these books. I agree with everything in this review, except for the fact of it blasting off like Harry Potter or Twilight. However, I certainly hope I am wrong because this book definitely should be read by everyone. And if it does suddenly have a flash of fame, I highly doubt there will be any anti-Gone people just like anti-twilight and such.

Nick Yeah I don't know if this will "take off" but I really don't care. I really liked this book and had alot to say (my review got to around 700 words before I even looked up). Im part-way through Hunger and am loving it even more which gives me great hope about how strongly this series will develop.

I did hear whispers this(like pretty much every other book I've ever read) may be made into a movie. I know it's a long shot but, if it was handled really well, it would be an awe-inspiring movie. I mean like a movie of the decade kind of thing. Obviously i'm not sure how you would get it under MA15+, which may I just say would be the most ironic thing ever. Imagine a movie about everyone 15 years and older disappearing and the only people who can see it are 15 years and older. I think it would probably work out pretty perfectly though because the younger readers of this book now would be about 16-18 by the time a movie got made.

Anyway, as of yet I am more than content simply READING this fantastic series.

Jj it did take off!

Mandy I totally agree with everything you said, but especially the covers! The covers in the UK are fantastic, you should check them out.

gone rocks, if you disagree you die

Simplicity No offense but I don't think this would become like HP.

Sarah MY ALL TIME FAVORITE BOOK YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT. I had to read it for school and I ended up falling for it so hard that I finished the whole series in like, a week maybe, give or take?

message 16: by Amy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amy I really liked this book, but it was too long. I read really long books, no problem, but this one felt like it should have been shortened to keep the story flowing better. Cut out 100 pages and I would agree with you.

Wahaj Siddiqi If this series reaches Hollywood, your prediction will definitely come true.
