This was one where I saw the movie before reading the book so I knew the overall story going in. Despite that, this book still broke my heart and left me a blubbering mess. It's compared to The Fault in Our Stars multiple times and while I can see the resemblance, this story also felt new and fresh to me.
The book focuses around teens with CF. I'm not honestly sure, but I don't think books involving CF are really out there and I liked that this focused on a disease that not many people know about. While I had heard of CF and knew the basics, this book really dived in and showed what happens to the body and what the person must go through daily to care for it. It wasn't always pleasant to read about, but it really added weight to the entire story.
And then there were the characters. Told in alternating POVs, the story follows Stella and Will - two teens with CF who end up in the same hospital and forge a friendship. Stella shows Will there's reason and logic to how structured her life is and Will shows Stella how to be more spontaneous. They both find things they were missing in each other, as cheesy as that sounds.
But it wasn't just the two of them who drove this book. There was an amazing set of side characters that rounded out this book. My two faves were Barb, the nurse and Poe, another CF teen and Stella's best friend. They were the heart that was needed to really make you feel what was going on. This book would not have been the same without them.
So why not 5 stars? Mainly because of how fast the relationship with Will and Stella grew. It felt very instalove. I get that it needed to be told in a certain time limit and honestly, I did love their relationship. But there were parts toward the beginning where I didn't believe the progression.
Now excuse me while I go rewatch the movie and cry again.
