Jim Puskas's Reviews > Bartleby the Scrivener
Bartleby the Scrivener

A wonderful exploration of the absurdities of human existence. Melville was very much a man ahead of his time and I suspect few readers during his lifetime truly appreciated or even understood what he was trying to say to us. This novella seems to point forward to 20th century works such as those by the likes of Jorge Luis Borges or George Orwell; while reading it, scenes from Chaplin films crossed my mind. Undoubtedly, several variations on "I would prefer not to" have emerged as watchwords of successive generations questioning the accepted narrative of their time and place.
