Ugh, these characters were so self-absorbed and ridiculous. I couldn't stand any of them. The writing was okay, not great, certainly not award-worthy. If any of these people had even once said what they really thought or felt instead of what they thought everyone else wanted them to say, it would have been so much better. Sure, it wouldn't have been as long a book, but it would have been less annoying. And likely less boring and cringe-inducing too.
If Rooney had spent as much time developing her characters as she did describing wine bottles being opened or tea being made, she may have created characters with depth, but she didn't. Instead she created a whole lot of cliches. I felt like this book was trying to be profound and deep and instead was silly and shallow. Much like the characters.
