I gave this book four stars originally because so many people like it but I can't do this anymore. This is a Boy Book (TM) that is very manly and masculine, and so hardcore. Your child (a boy) will definitely enjoy this book for boys. I read this as a sixth-grade girl (for school, of course, I would not subject myself to that willingly) and actually had high hopes for it. I did a bunch of wilderness and survival camps at that time and pretty much lived outside. I was reading at the level of grade 12, and I still had trouble getting through this repetitive and bland piece of garbage. Paulsen is still neat (he traveled with a circus? wow) but this book is really really bad.

I think the writing is what makes it annoying. There's no enjoyment in it. The story is kind of bland anyway, but the writing is so bad. Did I mention the repetition? It's so repetitive.
