March

Beautifully written book about a borrowed fictional character: Mr. March, the absent father in Little Women. Brooks patterned her Mr. March on the real life character of Louisa Alcott's father, Bronson Alcott. The novel is the story of a good man who volunteers to serve in the Civil War, and all the conflicts that ensue between his ideal self and the self he actually finds himself to be. The characters, even the minor ones, are vividly drawn and will I think continue to live in my memory.
