it was ok

My biggest thing with any historical fiction is that it must be factually correct! Especially if it's based on a real person's life, such as this one. I was very disappointed that in the author's note, Newman stated that this is not a factually correct account of Mrs. Lincoln's life, as I was hoping to learn more about her.
I don't know if Mary Lincoln was really a shopoholic who craved all and any kind of positive attention as she was written in this novel, but I found her to be incredibly annoying! Part of why I found her annoying was the fact that she was portrayed as being, or at least acting, very stupid.
The start of the book was very interesting to me, and I looked forward to reading it. However, as the book wore on, I found it to be a chore to read. Finally I got to the point where I was just reading it to conquer to book and be able to say I finished.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend reading this book. I found it to be a waste of time since it wasn't historically accurate and the story wasn't interesting.

Janice Robinson I'm not sure why you think it isn't historically accurate. There is nothing in it which contradicts known historical facts. Of course there is some speculation. That's what historical "fiction" is all about. If you don't want any speculation, then you should read straight history or biography. The important thing in historical fiction is that the speculation and interpretation not contradict any historical facts.....they don't have to be supported by fact. As for Mary being a shopaholic, yes, she was. That is a known historical fact.
