I loved listening to Where the Crawdads Sing. I was completely enthralled. My grandma had been telling me for months to read this book. I am kicking myself now for waiting.

This book is told in third person POV and jumps back and forth from Kya's childhood and life as she grows to the big event of Chase's murder and the trial attached. I think the back and forth was done well and it all fit together seamlessly. It is primarily set between 1952 and 1970 in North Carolina.

Kya's mother leaves her abusive husband and their five children when Kya is 6. Within a few weeks, Kya's three oldest siblings leave to escape their father too. Within a day or two, her brother Jodie, who was 6 years older than Kya, left. Kya was left alone for weeks at a time but her father would leave some money so she could buy some very meager groceries. Then by the time Kya was 9, her father disappeared all together and it was up to her to figure out how to survive. This is a story of her survival and growing up on her own. Thankfully, she found some help from a local man from "colored town" who ran a little bait shop / boat gas shack.

There were parts of this book that were difficult to read/hear and it was emotional at times. I didn't tear up until the very end though.

I really liked Jumpin and his wife Mable, Tate, and even Kya's brother Jodie. The characterization all felt pretty real and genuine.

I was surprised to learn that this is the author's first novel. She writes really well and I will be anxious to see what she does in the future.

The narration was great. The narrator did a wonderful job. This is definitely worth either a credit or paying full price. I will absolutely listen to this book again.
