The Book Thief

I found this book at first intriguing and then difficult to read. I can hardly remember what expectations I had of it, judging only by it's cover and an unfortunate glimpse of a movie trailer on tv a few weeks back, but I can comfortably say that all of those expectations were thrown out the window when I discovered that the book was narrated by Death.
Not only that, the book narrated by Death in Nazi Germany. Which resulted in a whole new set of expectations. Those were also not met.
Death says (although I cannot find the page to quote exactly) that it does not like mystery. That mystery bores death although it intrigues humans. I didn't like that perspective and was frustrated that Death kept stealing the mystery out of the book. I like books with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Preferably a happy ending, which I can tell you this book does not have. Unless you read the Epilogue. I don't like to know what is going to happen to main characters until it happens. I don't like Death foreshadowing Rudy's departure. Probably because it didn't make it any easier to bear when it happened.
I do, however, appreciate a book that, like The Book Thief, even if it is all over the place, has such a strong character development that you cannot help but fall in love with the characters.

“A small but noteworthy note. I've seen so many young men over the years who think they're running at other young men. They are not. They are running at me.”
