DNF. I gave the book 400 pages and I just can’t do it anymore... maybe another time??? Shall I share the 500 page rant I went on?? Why did a publisher go through with this without hiring an editor first??? Why is this discovery of witches being told through the eyes of an aggressive, semi misogynistic vampire we are supposed to fall in love with? Am I reading Twilight with a more interesting Bella character? Answers I will never have and time I will never get back. I wanted to like it and it had potential so that’s why I gave it 2 stars idk lol
Okay I’m back because I just have to say: There is literally a scene where the love interest comments on the small bag of clothes the protagonist packs for a week trip because ShE’s NoT LiKe oThEr GiRls!!! Ugh this book is for people who don’t understand that passion abuse. The love interest is controlling and manipulative and creepy but he’s a VAMPIRE so it’s OKAY for him to be an abuser. And the leading lady was Miss Independent until she met him and started bickering about sleeping schedules. He constantly kept info from her, just for fun, bossed her around, tricked her, drugged her (not kidding), and refused to have sex with her. Because that’s just the VAMPIRE way!!! I was so invested because I was intrigued by the world of witches (cardinal signs), vampires (fixed signs) and daemons (mutable signs) and because MAGIC but oh my oh my oh my... I almost want you to read it just to see how poorly it was executed??? I also loved the historical and scientific aspect of this, really it had potential! But alas. ‘Twas ruined by the vampire abuser trope. And slow plot. And descriptions of anything and everything (I truly feel like I read an encyclopedia on horseback riding, wine, chess, yoga, rowing, I even think I’ve learned how to jog better now). Anyway. I’ll shut up now and keep reading other negative reviews of this book for validation. STOP GLORIFYING ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS, PEOPLE!
