Heartbreakingly touching, The Color Purple is the story of two sisters, Celie and Nettie, who are connected by love and longing even though for most of their lives they are separated, oceans apart. Their story captures love, loss, abuse, poverty, devotion, and longing.
Nettie, a missionary, connects with the people in Africa, but deep in her heart, she longs to see her Sister again. Celie with a hard life fraught with abuse and a hardship, tries to find happiness wherever she can. Through a series of letters, written throughout the years, the sisters learn of each other’s lives (and we do, too, as readers).
The Color Purple is a classic story of a family trying to find their way, find love and acceptance, and find a way to carry on even though life tries to beat them down. A story to be read and reread.
