Actor and co-creator of Upstairs Downstairs Jean Marsh sent me this book in the 80s after we met and shared our love of novels by less known women writers. We swapped boxes of books, mine were by Americans and hers by British, women writers after she returned to England. I stumbled on this novel last week and am really glad I did. It has a squeal and it's just luck that I read the first one first! It's a light-hearted but perceptive look at a woman of beauty and means growing up during the early part of the 20th Century when political turmoil was book-ended by two major wars. Very good reading.
