Peter Pan

Having just attended a performance of the musical, I wanted to read the original story on which it was based. Being more familiar with the musical, I found myself reading with anticipation as to how (or if) the various episodes I had seen on stage would be handled in the book. Because the book was written over 100 years ago and by an author from Scotland, it wasn't surprising that the language was a bit unfamiliar to the modern American ear. And, as is often the case with these older novels, it seemed to me that the author was determined to include details in the story that are unnecessary and lead nowhere. ("The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is a maddening example of this.) I am glad the musical distills the story down to its more essential elements. The book is harsher (lots of killing), but several of the episodes still conveyed the touching quality that have made the story endure.
