** spoiler alert ** A treat for readers, providing us with surprises of what have become of our beloved characters. Especially in the first part, we get a glimpse of Jonas' community and Gabriel's early childhood from a different viewpoint. In the last part of the novel, and also the conclusion of the whole quartet, we see how Gabe grew up from the baby we know of him in The Giver, to a teenager battling against evil, like Matty did.
Even if you hadn't read the previous books, Claire's story is enough to leave readers intrigued. Her incredible journey of searching for her son is touching, and the last part of Gabe finally realising her as his mother is simply heart-breaking.
This thought-provoking book implicitly leaves us messages about relationship of mother and son, courage, determination, and most of all, self-sacrificing love.
