really liked it

Wells novel is about a group of life long friends, the Ya Ya’s who live, laugh and cry together in the South. This poignant tale examines the complex relationship of Vivi(mother) and Siddalee (daughter)most closely. Themes of friendship, crazy fun, alcohol abuse, child abuse and depression are tangled together in this novel of joy and heartbreak. Extremely entertaining, descriptive and deeply moving, this book makes you laugh out loud and shed too many tears.

It has literally taken me years to write a review for this book. It resonated so much with me....the unbelievable highs and devastating lows, and the love that knew no bounds. It was tough to get through this book, and I only wish all kids had YaYa’s, fathers and nursemaids to help them through the craziness. Vivi, the mother, is beyond complex: fun, loving and joyful one minute, and desperately sad, hateful and punishing , the next. Seeing how truly fragile one’s mother is, is unforgettable for a child. So is the guilt and blame they feel for simply existing and impeding their mother’s life. This book comes full circle the only way possible: forgiveness.
