If Deborah Harkness' A Discovery of Witches is a guilty pleasure, then I'm all for more of guilty pleasures, because I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy to come out.

::: The Plot :::

Diana Bishop is a hereditary witch, descended from a witch who was burned during the Salem Witch Trials. However, after Diana's parents were killed in Africa when she was seven, she has turned her back on her talents and devoted her life to academia, particularly historical science and its cousin, alchemy.

When she calls up an old manuscript she recognizes as magic, she draws the attention of all the magical creatures in the vicinity: other witches and their natural enemies vampires and daemons. One vampire in particular, a fellow professor at Oxford, takes an interest in both Diana and the manuscript, and they throw in their lot together to solve the mystery. If their partnership takes a turn toward romance, all the better.

::: The Guilty Part :::

I've often said my "shame reads" are classified here on GoodReads on my "vampires" shelf, and A Discovery of Witches hits all the markers: vampires, witches, paranormal events, romance, and above all, book porn. One of the things I love about vampire books is how much of history creatures that old have seen, and when you add in things like first editions of Darwin's Origin of Species with annotations, I geek out to a pathetic level. This book has it all in spades, and I read it every spare second I had, and if the other two books in the trilogy were out already, I'm sure I would have read all three back to back.

Even one glaring factual error wasn't enough to dissuade me from continuing to the end at breakneck speed. I'm an addict, and can't wait for my next hit.
