Ostensibly it's a record of the protagonist's relationships, with her mother, with the middle-aged "Milkman" that keeps following her around and the resulting gossip. But that story tells a larger one.
Those that want a fast-moving plot won't be amused, but I like it."

0% "Oh wow. There are all sorts of new developments. In Belfast, so many men died through violence, says our protagonist, that women often didn't marry a man if they loved him madly. It would hurt too much when he died. Better to marry the safe guy, the one you can live with but won't miss so much. And so it was with her mother. And then we come to the drama around the poisoner, who's poisoned her and been executed."
