CW: torturous execution
Hatred turns to pity turns to exhaustion. No one has the energy to fight forever.
I stumbled upon this short story by accident the other day while scrolling through some lists with sci-fi recommendations, the beautifully illustrated cover () made me read the synopsis which I thought sounded quite interesting and nothing like I ever read. Then I discovered that it's actually available for free on and because I desperatly need to beat a reading slump, I wanted to read it as soon as possible, so here we are!
Because this is such a concise story I don't want to give away anything that's not in the synopsis already. All I can to say is, in my eyes it's perfect for what it is and I adored it. Here's why:
01. Beautiful writing
02. Chinese-inspired worldbuilding
03. Sapphic space rebels
I repeat myself, but a novella (or in this case a story of mere 40 pages) works for me when I objectively can't ask for more in the end, but at the same time wouldn't mind reading another 200 pages and that's how I feel about Waiting on a Bright Moon.
Needless to say I'm going to check out Neon Yang's other works, they're definitely on my radar now.
