Got this at the second hand shop too...only 2 bucks! Boy did that $2 pay off. This was a fabulously written page turner of redemption, faithfulness and courage amidst great adversity. The characters must be renamed people he knew. They were incredibly real. He got into the mind of his main character so well. He weaves and pulls details from the beginning of the story as forms of foreshadowing of greater things to come. There is much mystery in the beginning that is revealed later. The main character, Amir is one whom you want to strangle in the early chapters and cheer on towards the ending. Hosseini does a beautiful character transformation in Amir. Now the ending, was a bit cliche. My husband had to convince me of this. He brought out that it was almost corny bringing one of Hassan's childhood bullies into the ending to battle with Amir as an adult. Yes honey you are right as usual. It was corny. Yet I enjoyed the greater portion of the book enough to give it a 4.
This book taught me a lot about the Afghan people and their culture. It is accurate and graphic in it's portrayal of the atrocities of the Taliban.
