I enjoyed these modern, slightly untraditional characters. The way Rooney expresses anxiety and inferiority felt genuine. Maybe I made the mistake of watching the show first? There was a certain lack of passion missing from the pages that were captured on screen. What I do appreciate is that the show really wasn’t overly lavished though and the book was basically a direct script for the most part. So in this case I think both versions make a great pairing, but as far as stand alones I’m not sure. I recommend reading the book first and then watching the show so the experience feels added on to and not subtracted.
