The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

A retired gentleman goes out for a walk and ends up trekking 627 miles, just to try to save the life of an ailing coworker who once did him a kindness. It could all have added up to a smug, feel-good tragicomedy, but luckily Joyce is too clever for that. Her novel subverts pat conclusions but still has broad appeal through its simple message about love and friendship in the face of purposeless suffering.
