Son (The Giver, #4)

First off, if you are going to read this book I strongly suggest that you reread the first 3 books.
The Giver is one of my favorite books of all time, and I really enjoyed the companion books, Gathering Blue and Messenger. The main reason I really enjoyed these books was that the connections between them were very subtle; this book is basically the opposite of subtle. I love the way Lowry writes but at times I felt like she was using the plot to bludgeon me repeatedly in the face saying “Do you get it? Aren’t I clever? It felt forced and drawn out at times.
This book is split into 3 sections and I definitely enjoyed the first two much more than the third section which I probably could have gone without completely.
The main character Claire is very likable and all the characters are very well written. I think I would have loved this if her son was not the boy that Jonas saved in The Giver but another boy entirely. I think what Lowry should have done is brought us back to the Giver with Claire and her son and allow us to witness the aftermath of the Giver and hopefully the down fall of that terrible and frightening society that Jonas escaped.
Mostly this book was just a disappointment. Great writing, great characters, great dialogue, terrible terrible plot!
