This starving artist tale, while slow to start, just kept getting better as it progressed. It is the first-person view of a writer's inability to make any money with his writing. He's distracted by hunger and homelessness, but he's also got way too much pride to accept any handouts. He gets hungrier and hungrier - then he gets a teeny little break in life and is fed. But, that is short-lived and he is once again hungry; hungrier even than he was before. Then he gets a break. But, alas! Another short-lived reprieve.

In his mind, he prays to God, then he curses God, then he loses faith. In his mind, he doesn't want to be a burden on his acquaintances, then he doesn't care about his acquaintances, then he is angry and offended at his acquaintances.

By the end, I was positively moved to want to scream at the unnamed narrator to stop being so prideful. And then, the narrator began to believe his pride would be the death of him.
