DNF at 38 pages. This reads like you’re running through terse stage directions about yet-to-be-named cast members. The characters have no emotions or thoughts, no personalities.

The protagonist is simply referred to as “the kid or “the boy, but other boys are also referenced in the same way. Men he meets are often called “the man, so it’s difficult to tell which one the author is talking about.

In this three-paragraph scene there are two men and two boys, but you have to read it over and over to figure it out, and even then, it’s still possible that there is only one man after all! “The kid found his other boot. . .a boy was drawing water at a well. . .a man came from the dramshop door down the walk toward the outhouse. . .The kid looked at the man. His head was strangely narrow. . .

This is in addition to the fact that there are no quotes or indications of dialogue. So no quotes, no names, no emotions. The book is about these nameless, generic people beating and killing each other, stealing from each other, etc. Since you never hear what anyone is thinking or feeling, there is no one to sympathize with or be interested in. And, despite all the nonstop action, the story is boring. It’s just fight scene after fight scene, no background information, no complexity, no thoughts, barely any dialogue.

I don't understand why this would appeal to someone.
