did not like it

I sincerely wanted to like this book. I do really enjoy the idea of this world, and the characters have so much potential. But it's just not well written. The sentence structure is clunky, the diction is either repetitive and simplistic or convoluted with no balance, and the plot progresses quite often with wide leaps which simply aren't justifiable. I'm sure Polk knows exactly what she wants to convey, but she doesn't fully get her ideas across. I feel like she is exploiting same sex relationships merely to get her book sold. I have to admit that I find this author's twitter feed comments to be extremely arrogant, and I am turned off by how terribly she responds to her fans. So this being said, perhaps my dislike for the manner in which Polk represents herself on social media has influenced how I feel about this book. I want to own that to be fair; however, I really, genuinely do not enjoy prose written by tone deaf authors. The pacing of her sentence structure and her word choices are so utterly grating that it was difficult for me to even finish this book. I am definitely glad that I bought a used copy for two dollars and didn't spend more. This is one I will be promptly donating to the recycling bin.

Em Wow, harsh, but I agree that this one just didn't have what the first one did, and I was hoping for the opposite. I also agree that the language is awkward. I felt that too; I just didn't realize how to verbalize it.

Okay Then So, back in October, two tanky idiots tried to create a twitter shitstorm by claiming all genre fiction is fascist. Authors of genre fiction engaged with them. Polk was especially kind and patient with them, while standing up for her genre. Em and Norr are those two idiots.

I’m not sure why they’ve been holding this particular grudge for four months, but since it appears that they created their two accounts specifically to shit on Polks new book within hours of it launching, it’s pretty clear that is what has occurred.

I also want to include that these two shouldn’t be advising anyone on literary quality after one of them wrote an extremely offensive, clunkily written, edited-by-their-mom asian-fetish novel, the other one slapped some home drawn anime stick figure art on the cover, and they proceeded to try to self-pub sell it to the public.
