A good concise history of Moorish Spain. Written in the nineteenth century, you'll probably come across lots of words you don't recognise as I did. The Moors established a civilisation which for many hundreds of years was far in advance of anything else in Europe, but internal fighting and bickering led them into a decline until they lost every last bit of territory. Sadly the Christian monarchs of Spain destroyed much the Moors had created, even the bathhouses because they considered the Moors' focus on cleanliness not Christian.
Visiting Andalucia last year, I got to see some of the amazing architecture the Moors created. The most poignant sight was seeing an elderly man dressed in his jellaba in the cathedral in Cordoba built on the mosque it once was, standing forlornly before the Mihrab ( prayer niche ) that survives while tourists ignored the importance of the spot to him as they jostled to take selfies.
