First read in 1999; re-read in 2003, 2005, 2007.
My favourite of the series. Lots of conflict and tension and a sense of dread throughout, with one twist I didn鈥檛 see coming (although I did figure out a couple of other things). I thoroughly enjoy the Remus Lupin and Sirius Black storylines. It鈥檚 wonderful the way Lupin takes Harry under his wing and how Harry learns to combat the dementors. Sirius鈥檚 situation pulls at my heartstrings; he has such devotion to Harry under that formidable personality. I also like the hippogriff plot, how everything comes together at the end, and the role that Hermione plays in it all. Throughout the series, I like the fact that Harry鈥檚 successes are generally the result of a team effort.

“What was there to be gained by fighting the most evil wizard who has ever existed?" said Black, with a terrible fury in his face. "Only innocent lives, Peter!"
"You don't understand!" whined Pettigrew. "He would have killed me, Sirius!"
"THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED!" roared Black. "DIED RATHER THAN BETRAY YOUR FRIENDS, AS WE WOULD HAVE DONE FOR YOU!”
