What a great ending to this series!
I have loved Rick Riordan books for the longest time. The first two Trials of Apollo books? Perfection. But when I picked up the third...I found I didn't like as much. I don't know why. Maybe it was the fact that I was older. Maybe it was something else. Whatever it was, I was extremely disappointed. What had happened to my beautiful books?
It was more than half a year after the fourth Trials of Apollo book came out that I finally picked it up and before I did that I read the entire series over again, just to remember what the heck happened. Guess what? I still didn't like the third book. And yet the first and second were fine! The fourth was also excellent.
And then came the fifth. Book number five. The last book in the series. I didn't know what to expect, if it would be good like most of the series or worse like book three.
Here's what I learned while reading this book:
Camp Halfblood=I like this book
Solangelo=I like this book
POSSIBILITY FOR ANOTHER SERIES????=I LIKE THIS BOOK
So. As you have probably surmised: I like this book.
The plot: After spending time on the West Coast at Camp Jupiter to deal with assorted things including Jason's death and fixing yet another oracle, Apollo and Meg are on their way back to New York City to confront and hopefully kill the last and most dangerous emperor: Nero. Even with their friends from Camp Halfblood beside them - and a few unusual new acquaintances - the odds are not looking in their favor. And even if they do manage to defeat Nero, Apollo still has to fight Python, his worst enemy, to take back control of the most important oracle of them all - the oracle of Delphi.
The characters: I mean....it's the same set of characters from the last four books. Here is what I can say, though. Apollo has changed. A lot. And I am so glad that he's not the insufferable little rat that he was at the beginning of this series. He actually cares for other people! How amazing
The battle with Python
I enjoyed this book overall. However, the battle with Python? I thought it was a little...anti-climactic. Short. I don't know. Like, sure it took a while, but it still seemed like it could have taken longer. I also don't really like that Apollo went down by himself. I mean like fighting Python was his 'destiny' or whatever and he had to do it alone but...come on. More people always makes a battle more interesting.
In fact, I found the entire ending a little....off. I enjoyed seeing all the people that he met over the journey again - especially Piper - but I found it so weird how Apollo just woke up on Mount Olympus after he sort of passed out after the battle. It was just...I don't know.
I still enjoyed this book immensely. And let's get back to that 'potential for another series'. HECK YES!!! THERES PROB GONNA BE ANOTHER SERIES YAAAAAAAY!!!!! AND IT WILL HAVE ALL THE DIFFERENT MYTHOLOGIES IN IT. Oh man, I've been wanting to see Magnus and Alex again for a while. I can't wait.
