Such a beautifully written story, and a solid 4.5 stars.

Enter Addie LaRue. At the turn of the 18th century in a little village in France, she makes an impulsive deal with the devil - an unending, unbound life in exchange for her soul. The problem, however, is that she has no identity in this new world; no one remembers her, she leaves no mark and no proof of her existence. For nearly three centuries, Addie manages to survive, until she winds up in New York City and meets Henry, the first person who actually remembers who she is.

The novel is split up across multiple timelines, including the present (New York City, 2017), Addie's several centuries of past, spanning various years and countries, and Henry's own recent history. With each chapter, we get to see how both Addie and Henry are able to reach their present, and just how complicated and lengthy Addie's relationship is with Luc, the name she has given the devil. The writing is beautiful, the protagonists are so well-crafted with emotions and desires, and the novel itself brings to light so many topics and questions. What is life without an identity, friendships and family, and the memory of each other? Where do the lines between friendship and romance lie? How do you stay true to yourself in a world that is constantly trying to tell you and mold you into what it thinks you should be?

If I had one critique, there were a number of chapters and segments within the novel that didn't feel necessary and seemed to only draw out the novel length (which is not a short read at ~450 pages), but this is nonetheless one of my best reads of the year so far.
