The Survivors

In her fourth novel Jane Harper outdoes her excellent previous books. The Survivors has more depth, more emotional intensity and truly depicts the good and bad in small town Australia.
This book takes place on the East Coast of Tasmania, a place I have visited and loved. The insular towns and their residents are both welcoming and hostile, if there is any reason to be. Deaths, 12 years apart, bring the town apart. Kieran and the mother of his daughter Mia, who also comes from the mythical town of Evelyn Bay, are back for a visit from Sydney, to help his mother pack up their house as his father has dementia and is fading fast. His older brother and two others in the town died in a big storm 12 years ago, which has impacted on most people in the town, especially those directly affected by tragedy.
Ms Harper really gets inside the townspeople and the emotional tragedy from 12 years ago and the death that happens during Kieran and Mia's current visit. Much more engrossing than her previous efforts, she surpasses the inolvement of the reader with this page turner. I loved it.
I recommend Nilufer Ozmekik's review if you want more depth into what is going on here.
