A bit too complicated for its own good, yet hinging on one of Simenon's key insights into the effects of poverty, and a coincidence that doesn't seem too far fetched. The interplay between Maigret and his wife and Maigret's mentoring of Lapointe make this satisfying for a long term Maigret fan (like me), but if you're new to the books start with earlier volumes.

Ebba Simone This is one of my favourite Maigrets. I really enjoy the interplay and the beginning of the story. Read this a few years ago and would like to re-read this soon. Ebba
