I mean where do I even begin?
Heart warming but sufficiently "real". Terry Pratchett knew how to write. But this book showed how well he can write women. Front, center, unabashedly themselves. I used to think that Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg were his best written women. Not even close. Of course they are more deeper because they have had so many books to be developed, but the women of Monstrous Regiment can hold up their own.
This Pratchett at his peak. I cant imagine that this is the same author that wrote The Colour Of Magic. The book where a group of jokes made up the story. To something like Monstrous Regiment that spills to the brim with social commentary and charm.
Dont miss this book if you're reading the Discworld books

"Always a pleasure to see the Watch in any of the books!
‘Right, Mister Vimes, said Reg, grinning and revealing a lot of brown teeth.
‘Some fellow countrymen of yours down in the cellar, Reg.
‘Oh, dear. Lurching, are they?
‘’fraid so, Reg.
‘I shall go and have a word with them, said Reg. He saluted again and marched out, with a hint of lurch."

"‘Well, I’m not buying into it. It’s all trickery. They keep you down and when they piss off some other country, you have to fight for them! It’s only your country when they want you to get killed! said Tonker. ‘All the good bits in this country are in this tent, said the voice of Wazzer."
