Wowowowowow I learned a lot! This is an important book and every politician should read it. There were 3 major problems with this book for me:
1) there was just a tiny bit of intersectionality but overall, it was severely lacking. I think the likely reason is that data are even less likely to exist on female minorities, or women in poverty. In a book that talks about data gaps, I think this should be mentioned once or twice!! AND there were 0 references to the data gap on transgender women/people and non cigendered people! If I had a child who wanted to transition, my one and only concern would be “what are the health risks/benefits of the process of transitioning? When I researched this topic, there were NO data!! The only data you can find is about suicide risks, which is obviously important as transgender people are at a higher risk of suicide, but we need more information! Is transitioning safe? How can we make it safer? These are all data gaps that are killing women and I was hoping to get that information here but I was very disappointed. Not including these marginalized groups is sexism in a book that I’m sure was written with the intent of fighting sexism.
2) There were very few counter-perspectives offered or explained. In any persuasive writing, you need to address the long standing beliefs that have lead society to be the way it is other than the simple
explanation that “women were ignored. Though, this is likely true, what beliefs were held by the men that were designing society that incorrectly accounted for the lives of women? There were some statistics mentioned that had obvious possible confounding variables that were not addressed. I do think the overall point of her argument is accurate and infuriating but you can’t convince someone that thinks otherwise if you’re not educated on their perspective as well.
3) OK this is petty BUT it’s an entire book about data. The author repeatedly made the grammatical error of referring to the word data as a singular noun when it is the plural form of the word datum. Again, it wouldn’t have bothered me as much if that wasn’t what the entire book was about.
