I love reading about Hal Halvorsen and the Berlin Airlift. The story fascinates me, and not just because my grandma lived through it. It is amazing that in just 3 years the American Air Force went from bombing Berlin to flying food in to keep them alive. Reading this book made me realize just how precarious the circumstances were. Studying history highlights how the personalities of the people involved directed and influenced the events as we know them. The hinges of history swing over the smallest of decisions.
This history was 550 pages of solid facts. In fact it was so dense that I struggled at times getting into it, but for that reason alone I would recommend it! Cherny discussed not only the Berlin Airlift but also political support and back-biting back home.
