it was ok
bookshelves: 2022-reads, not-a-fan, mediocre

I was looking for a supernatural and a ghastly treat of a novel to read and Mexican Gothic sounded like the perfect one for my mood. Set in Mexico in the 1950s with a strong female lead, it checked all my boxes for mystery, spooks, and fun!

As you can tell by my rating, unfortunately, this book didn't live up to my standards of a 'good, spooky book'. While it had all the elements to make it fantastic, the execution was largely unsatisfactory. I found it difficult to like and connect with the main character Noemi as she felt very two-dimensional to me. Noemi lacked a lot of character depth which made the whole reading experience a bit off. Did the rest of the characters in the book make up for it? No. If Noemi felt two-dimensional, the others were definitely one or two (maybe even three?) levels below.

Did the storyline make it worth it? No. The twists in the book were disappointing and almost laughable. While the book was paced very well (quick and action-packed), the events in the book seemed too contrived and cliched. Because of these reasons, I couldn't really sink into the 'grisly' setting of the book.

While the beautiful cover definitely lured me in, I truly wish I could have enjoyed this book as much as several others did but it was a huge miss for me!
