it was ok

A+ idea, D execution. What a letdown.

I wanted a puzzles and riddles and games. I wanted questions with seemingly impossible, shocking answers. I wanted a posse of fascinating, well-developed characters with secrets. I wanted complicated, dramatic romantic entanglements and family drama in spades.

Instead, The Inheritance Games is slow and a tad dull, light on the puzzles and "games." The drama feels forced and I never felt engaged with the characters. In fact, Avery's two potential "love interests," brothers Grayson and Jamison are indistinguishable. Until the very end, I was at a loss who was who and what I was supposed to know about each of them. Which makes it difficult to feel anything but apathy when the romantic tension comes to a head.

And then there's the lackluster ending with a "twist" I did not care about and a cliffhanger (apparently this is a series for some baffling reason) that left me frustrated. Why did I waste my time on this book if I was going to get zero resolution? There is not enough plot here for more books. Hello, cash grab.

How disappointing.

Paige Leone This sums up exactly how I felt.

Melinda Agreed, I was shocked when I saw how high the rating on here was.

Mary Yes! I was hoping for more clever puzzles and things that you could almost “play along with. Something you could feel like you were solving too. But instead it was very basic and lackluster in my opinion.

Selah Yes!! I thought I was the only one who didn't like the book.

Kristi Mason Agreed. Glad I only wasted a few hours on it. It completely failed to engage.

Cameron I could have written this review. VERY similar to what I just posted. We are in the minority it seems.

Weendy Lry There was nothing entertaining about this book. I finished 2 books while trying to get through The Inheritance Games. I hate how Avery, Jameson and Grayson was written

Lee 100% agree. Grayson and Jameson - indistinguishable. The Emily subplot - pointless. Avery - meh. Max and her made up swear words - so mother trucking annoying and juvenile.
Blurb says “We were liars meets the da Vinci code... I say pffft - don’t ever mention those titles in relation to this book. They are examples of a five star mystery book. This is a two.

Lurva I can't tell the guys apart either

message 10: by Allie (new)

Allie I couldn’t finish it. The writing was so bad. I felt like I was reading a clean 50 shades of gray

Bhoomi Saraogi this sums up my feelings. the whole emily plot was so ridiculous - they talked about her so damn much she may as well have been the main character. and who bases such an elaborate, expensive, confusing dumbass puzzle just to get two brothers to sort their issues out??? yk what he could’ve done instead- FREAKING TALK TO THEM

message 12: by teabag (new) - added it

teabag do you know any books with puzzles, riddles, games like you expected?

message 13: by Hiro (new) - rated it 2 stars

Hiro Fitzherbert Yes! It's was really boring. I just forced myself to finish it and jumped too many chapters just so I could get to the ending.

Nicki Shannon I'm totally with you on the Jamie. I thought it was just me as I saw the raving 4 and 5 star ratings for this book. I'm only 318 pages in and it's not engaged me at all, if anything I'm bored with the storyline and the same with the 2 nephews, it only towards the end now that I really know who these people are. I feel there are to many characters in this short 385 page book and you don't know a great deal about any of them 🤨

Nicki Shannon *on this one Jamie.
Sorry that will teach me for predictive text writing

message 16: by Naya (new) - rated it 1 star

Naya The cliffhanger was so annoying. Why would I give a fuck about Toby when I barely know him???. Literally all I knew was that he “died and played chess like okay Why should I care?

message 17: by Naya (new) - rated it 1 star

Naya The fact that the second book is supposed to be about that just feels dumb when we never got enough info in the first book to really give a fuck.

Michelle Do you have any recommendations for good books with puzzles, riddles, and games? I'm trying to find books that match these criteria and I'm having a hard time. Thanks!

Chana Ceasar I also couldn’t tell the love interests apart. Lol

C. (Comment, never msg). The term is non-crime mystery, my favourite. That is why I was thrilled to find this. Robin Sloan's three mysteries are non-crime as well.

amina My opinion exactly!

Megan Lanier Only one riddle .... I mean come the hell on! The Hobbit had more than that 🤣

Honorah yes preach idk why everyone is in love with this book

message 24: by Abbey (new) - added it

Abbey @michelleinwonderland read the mysterious Benedict society!!

message 25: by Andrew (new) - added it

Andrew Lewis I disagree that Grayson and Jameson are indistinguishable due to the fact that grayson is much more serious and smart alek while Jameson likes to play with Avery's head when they are solving probloms together

Jordan Shumate I feel very similar and I am only a little over halfway through the book. It just seems too young and very poorly paced. The awkward chapters (which are constantly changing scenes without much detail since chapters are but maybe 4-10 pages long) and the awkward interactions between characters. It just doesn't sit well. I was so excited to read it but now... I'm thinking of having to DNF it.

Mike L R H its a pretty good book

message 28: by NA (new) - rated it 3 stars

NA I agree with you babe

Aileen Liu This is the exact statement that was playing through my head. Shouldn't it be at least a little harder to choose between the two brothers?

Keturah Johnson 100% agree. Ridiculous.

Meghan (LYHFML version) This is what I was thinking when I finished the book

Sienna Jade Could not disagree more

Maddie Spade I love this book, and wish you well with the rest of the series. I hope the twist in the second book is good enough for you because it got me good. Also, Grayson and Jameson are two totally different characters with two astonishingly well written personalities, and I'm sad you didn't get to interact with the characters as well as some other people.
