A Discovery of Witches (All Souls, #1)

I just read some of these reviews.First of all, I believe the editing is well done. The historical and alchemical details separate this book from the commercially produced, not-so-literate Sookie Stackhouse novels. I love those books but they are fluff. The alchemical details connect the magic with the science and to the historical details. The story is much heartier and more relevant than the more commercial series. I also love the complexity of the charactors. How refreshing to get to know a fierce vampire who is also not only intelligent but learned, its much more real than a stereotypical, mysterious vampire whose charactor is almost scripted: moody, tortured, brooding, fierce, sexual, beast. It's these details and beautifully researched history that make this book much classic fiction and much less commercially produced fluff.
This was an incredible book. I loved it. Not only full of magic and mystery but intelligent; historical and brilliantly researched. It is very easy to see that Deborah Harkness is not only intelligent but passionate and scholarly-I can almost smell the Bodleian library. How glorious to be in the presence of Ms. Harkness brilliant mind. In addition, Diana's aunts live in Madison, NY, which is right in my backyard and her aunts and I have a lot in common.
I generally don't read series, so if I get involved in a series its because a book is brilliant!!!! I loved, loved, LOVED this book!
