A Discovery of Witches (All Souls, #1)

This is an interesting book with an interesting plot, but...
I think I would have enjoyed this book more if it wasn't overly long-winded. I feel that this book can be reduced to 50% of it's size as there are several junk chapters in the book that did not help in developing the story e.g. those dinners and wine drinking between the vampire and the witch!
Another reason this book was so long, in my opinion, is the way the author writes. Deborah Harkness is not an economical writer. I can literary read the first and last sentences of a lengthy paragraph and yet missed nothing important. It is just not worth the efforts to go through a book as thick as a yellow-pages phone book for the story.
I also had the feeling that the author has done a lot of research in this area that she felt compelled to put everything she knows into the book (to make her efforts worthwhile), making the book overloaded with unnecessary details, which at times distracted me more than luring me into her story.
I will not be reading the next 2 books of this series.
