Just Us is a beautiful book in every sense of the word. The physical book itself is gorgeous: thick, smooth pages with wonderful photos. The prose. The thought behind and in it.
At the end of the book, Rankine writes "response is my strategy." She wanders throughout the pages interrogating what we take for granted, where white supremacy, where racism lives. She questions businessman in airports. She responds in uncomfortable ways at dinner party. Above all she doesn't look away or present easy answers.
What's important, what matters is (I think she means) is that we respond, we stay alive, we don't numb ourselves or lie to ourselves about who we are and what our country is about.
Amongst other things, Rankine considers Barbies, blondness, detention centers, white male privilege to name just a few of her subjects and brings her razor sharp intelligence, wit, and control of language to illuminate them.
Rankine is a brilliant poet and thinker. This is a book to be valued and read more than once. I am grateful to own and have read it.
