★★½
This novel provides an in-depth account of Circe’s life, not focused on any single plot besides her own development. The synopsis seems to suggest otherwise, but I can’t blame the book for not being what I expected, especially since it’s still a respectable endeavor. I appreciate the idea of giving a voice to a minor character from Greek mythology (a woman, specifically), and I can’t ignore the honesty, wisdom, and power of the prose. But I spent most of the book unengaged and disinterested. It never captured my attention for more than a few pages at a time, and I couldn't help wanting or expecting more. I adore character development—but when it’s baked into a larger story, not the story.

"The pacing is sluggish. Stakes heighten occasionally but always return to inactivity, and I can’t trace the main plot. This reads like Circe’s diary rather than a story with a developed arc."
