Otherworld Nights is anthology #3 which offers eight short stories with a variety of characters from Armstrong's Otherworld series. I initially picked up this anthology for Elena and Clayton but I finished the entire anthology. Surprisingly, the biggest emotional highs (and lows) came from the stories with the other characters. Yes, there are minor spoilers if you haven't read up through Thirteen, but they weren't sufficient to prevent me from enjoying this collection.
"Demonology" - Adam Vasic was introduced in Stolen #2. This story centers around young single mother Talia, trying to discover whether anything is wrong with her 8 year old son Adam just because he displays a burning fascination with fire. Armstrong ended this story prematurely as she didn't include Talia's reaction to the knowledge; I wanted to see her reaction.
"Twilight" - Introduced in Stolen, Cassandra and Aaron reveal more of Armstrong's vampire lore, as immortality requires an annual price. This story dragged for me, probably reflecting Cassandra's ennui as this is her story.
"Stalked" - Clayton and Elena's honeymoon story, which takes place between Broken #6 and Frostbitten #10. Middle age angst catches up with Clay as a mutt stalks Elena.
"Chivalrous" - Introduced in Frostbitten, werewolf Reese's backstory is tragic amidst the brutal the male-dominated werewolf culture of Australia. This delivered the biggest emotional punch.
"Lucifer's Daughter" - Werewolf Karl appeared in Bitten #1. He's been an ambivalent character - is he friend or foe to Jeremy's Pack? Karl reveals his softer side as he accompanies girlfriend and half-demon Hope Adams to a special museum exhibition and has a special surprise for the occasion. This was the most light-hearted story in the anthology.
"Hidden" is one of two included novellas and it's set shortly after Frostbitten. Clayton and Elena's twins are four years old. Elena is struggling with when to tell the twins what their parents are whereas Clay has no hesitation. Circumstances force their hands as a mutt intrudes on their family's Christmas holiday.
My only quibble is how articulate the 4 year old twins sound; their speech could pass for much older kids. Remember how Clay sounded during his first year with Jeremy in Men of the Otherworld? Clay was seven or eight but he spoke like a 4 year old with his fragmented speech and nonexistent sentences.
"From Russia with Love" is set immediately after Thirteen #13. This covers how Elena becomes the new Alpha of the North American Pack. I haven't read Thirteen so this is slightly spoiler-y, but was there any doubt that Armstrong would ensure the survival of her main protagonists?
"Vanishing Act" is the other novella that takes place after Thirteen. Witch Savannah Levine, age 22, believes it's time for her to make some big decisions about her future. Will long-term crush Adam Vasic play any role in her choices? I haven't read any of the novels which have been written in her POV but I feel that I've gotten a strong sense of a magically powerful but slightly immature twenty-something so maybe.
