Excellent 1st effort. Very noir in style. I liked the setting of Budapest for a crime/mystery. The essential crime could have been set in London, Paris or New York but the time & cityscape made Budapest a good setting. Good atmosphere & sense of the period. I especially liked the creeping of fascism, as so many people of today like to think if they were living then & there it wouldn't have happened. As this novel points out subtlety, the changes small & seemingly unimportant (at least to the population at large) gather until collectively the problems converge into a sticky mess. Would have given a 5 star but for a few jarring time lapses where our hero goes in a building in the morning and comes out shortly after some dialogue in the night; a good copy editor could have fixed those.
