I think this must be a marmite book. I forced myself to finish it as so many people like it I thought I must be missing something. It didn't get any better for me. I found the characters stereotyped and shallowly drawn. It probably didn't help that it jumps around so much that you never get time to identify with any character. The various strands of the plot seemed to have promise but some of the resolutions didn't ring true to me. It might work better as a film.
