it was amazing
bookshelves: classics, reviewed-books, to-reread

There was a time in my life when I couldn’t get enough of reading Dostoevsky. Maybe because his books made me think so deeply about being human and how we choose to live our lives. I began with Crime and Punishment, probably the work he is best known for.

What I remember is being fascinated by Dostoevsky’s brilliant understanding of human nature. I remember thinking what a deep study this book was; an incredible examination of a man who commits murder and how he is “punished for it.

I remember thinking that here was a master storyteller. Not only able to create complex characters, but able to take the reader deeply inside a character’s mind. Best of all, I remember that I would stop reading periodically and think; not a mindless read, but an absorbing one.

Alessia This is exactly how I felt while reading this book. I wondered at Dostoevskij's ability to make you stop and think about the meaning of the word "human", about our choices and the consequences of what we do, about what is wrong and what is right both for ourselves and for other people. Thank you for pointing it out and making me remember!

Estefania I was very surprised first time I read this book. I still remember it came to my mind the image of a human nature surgeon. I've never met a writer who does more observable human soul, and with such rigor. And if someone knows any other one I would really appreciate recommendations.

Elene Dostoevsky is my favourite writer,i had the luck to read it in Russian,he writes perfectly.after reading crime and punishment, during the months i was thinking about it.He is a great psychologist. In this book i was impressed with the character named Svydrigailov, the man who couldn't find a fridge between the goodness and evil.

Viswanathan Venkataraman Your first paragraph articulates my thoughts. The first line is exactly what I went through. That was in 60's and 70's and when i look back Dostoevsky still remains as an author who left deep impact on me. Yuu have expressed the sentiments very well.

Allyson S. I couldn't of had said it better myself! What a remarkable story-teller!

Janith Pathirage These stories portrait his own life experiences... Dostoevsky has suffered like hell.

Sajeev Jesa A true masterpiece by the great author.

Dylan Benedict Perfectly expressed how I felt reading this. Dostoyevsky really was a master.

Brex (Bookosaurus_Rex) Can’t wait to read this.

Ivan Well, after re-reading it in college, I must say i am greatly disappointed with this work.
There is really not much in the fact that the whole book revolves around one guy who decides to murder an old woman - and the consequences.

Yumin I finished this book two days ago and still now I feel I am absorbed in it. I totally agree with what you say about Dostoyevsky... He really knew what human is. But as a person with Asian background, I personally think the process to salvation of Rodya depicted in this novel is rather Asian than Western.

Aamer Mogul I am starting it today, I have high expectations from what I have learnt from reviews.

Celine Jewell Couldn’t agree more.

Marcie I read quite a few Dostoyevsky. I couldn’t put Brothers Karamazov down. Talk about the “human condition!

Lorenzo I just finished it right now, and I can't quote a better comment then yours.

My mind was thirsty of reading the next page, but I feel like I need some space to rethink and absorb. Even now, I can't completely give it up; I need to explore better the relationship between me and the book and the characters.

Amazing piece of art.

Mayank Agrawal Its not a book, its a Mood.

Lucy Langhart I cannot stress how much I loved this book. The fact that Dostoyevsky was able to covey the fragile, punishing nature of the human psyche so beautifully blows my mind.
The relationship between Raskolnikov and Sonia is one of the most beautiful and realistic love stories ever written.
It’s truly a life changing read.

Zeya Sharib Whose translation(to English) is the best. I really want to read this book heard a lots of good things about it but am confused about which translation to pick up. Can anyone please suggest

Karma Jones The contemporary translation by Richard Pevear (American) and Larissa Volokhonsky (Russian) is the best and most accurate. It has earned a very good reputation from the readers. The married couple has won several prizes for their translations of Russian classics.

Francisco Núñez Lovely review, I agree so much with your opinion and shared similar thoughts with one of my students whom I lend this book to. For me it doesn't get better in russian literature than with Dostoivski and Tolstoi.

Priscilla I loved this book and your review. Just finished this a few weeks ago and man spot on. Also crazy how love I mean, genuine unconditional, realistic, love can pull someone from the depths of their own hell
