it was amazing

I really enjoyed this cancer survivor memoir. Suleika was diagnosed with Leukaemia in her early 20s and does an amazing job sharing how hard it is going through chemo and other medical procedures as a relatively young and healthy person when the life you expected to lead goes up in flames and you have to figure a new “normal. She does an excellent job detailing how difficult her illness was for her boyfriend and the toll him being a primary caregiver for her ultimately took on their relationship. Many of the things she experiences relate also to people living with chronic illnesses or disabilities and I found it very relatable. The book is extremely well written - Suleika wrote about her experiences for a column in the New York Times and has a great way with words. The second half of the book sees her coming to terms with being a cancer survivor, bouts of depression and dealing with loss and grief over friend’s deaths. She ends up going on a solo journey across the country visiting with people who had written to her and finding a newfound sense of independence along the way. Highly recommend, especially for fans of Sitting Pretty or Natural Killer. The book is excellent on audio with the author as narrator.
