did not like it
bookshelves: dnf, netgalley

Okay, I’m throwing in the towel. I’m not finishing. This is the 3rd Josh Malerman release in a row that just hasn’t worked for me, and I guess I’m done with him. These stories aren’t actively terrible—they’re just not clicking with me. I’m finding the town of Goblin not to be sketched out or developed really at all, and the characters that populate the stories I‘ve read thus far just aren’t interesting. This feels like the Creed or Daughtry of horror: pleasant, unchallenging, non-threatening to white folks. Ha!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC, of course. I’m sure this collection will work for some other readers. It just wasn’t my bag.

Jeremy Maddux Wow, I don't know too many people who dislike three Malerman books in a row. I respect it, but don't recall ever seeing it before. I think sometimes the hype supercedes the author at some point.

I read one. That was enough for my lifetime. Yes, it was that one.

Jameson Weird dig at white people for no reason, as if any other race is a bigger producer or consumer of horror, but ok.

Wynter Marie Midnight at least you got the dang ARC from NetGalley!!!! I ended up spending my hard-earned money at Barnes & Noble... I LOVE the cover, It is so freaking beautiful and creepy looking... the summary of the book sounded so so so good as well!!! but, I ended up trying to read it in October 2021, put it down, then tried it again in November 2021 and I got 50% thru and ended up DNF'ing the book completely. I spent pretty much $30 on this book and I cannot take it back since I bought it months and months before I tried to read it! I wish we could return books anytime... no matter how long ago I bought it! haha, as long as it's in like-new condition! Like if it has been over 60/90 days, you can only get store credit/gift card ...

Wynter Marie Midnight "This feels like the Creed or Daughtry of horror: pleasant, unchallenging, non-threatening to white folks. Ha!" -also, what did you mean by this?? i am just wondering...

Aaron Lindsey I understand completely! Different flavors for different folks. I love Malerman's writing, but can't get into Paul Tremblay or Grady Hendrix at all. I've DFN'd every book I've tried of Tremblay, and Hendrix (except for Paperbacks from Hell, I love that one).

Jeff Neiss Nice racist dig at Caucasian people in your review. People like you are the reason the world is so divided.
