Not an obituary.
Because it tells the stories of when the neighbour, the authors Paniotis (p. 90) and Angeliki (p. 103) and the other seven persons in this novel fail. It tells about their excuses, but not their regrets, whereas an obituary would tell about their achievements and offer no excuses. However, like obituaries, the stories told looks much alike.

About relations. This is a sort of Decameron story telling, but without the sex. By the way, the “I fall short of reading the Neighbour, to me a little strange. Which it probably should not be. It shows that if you want to know the inner emotional skeleton of a woman, you can order a coffee at a table in a cafe, whereas to get the same information from a man, you have to sit beside him on a long air flight. (Not quite correct, but that was my impression when I started reading the novel. )

At a first glance, this is ten stories about ten people without much connection, except that several of them are authors. At a second glance, the stories may circulate among a common theme in an intriguing fashion, like a symphony orchestra that plays the same theme, but in different moods. However, I am not at the second glance yet. But I am not saying it is not possible to find it.

The drama. The stories are not too dramatic, I am looking for an ocean swell in the novel, but it never appears. “That is a shame, she said. Are you looking forward to going back? In a way, I said. (p.247). And so am I, the reader. There are a lot of nice quotation sentences, and you have to keep your attention span alive.

The novel had an easy flow, but the language has long sentences that sometimes flow back to themselves. The catchy sentences with high density contents sometimes trick me into thinking deeper than is natural, but they also sometimes- make me think that the depth would have been less if I divided the sentence into two shorter sentences. It sounds a little as if the author were a teacher at an author-school. Which the “I in this novel is.

Citations sometimes very long
“There comes a point at which the record needs to be updated, because you have shed too many links with what you were p. 45, that is, you have forgotten who you are.

“Sometimes it seems to me that life is a series of punishments for such moments of unawareness that one forgets one’s own destiny by what one doesn’t notice or feel compassion for,,. p. 94

“The human capacity for self-delusion is apparently infinite... p.95

.. feeling a stillness after a life in of too much motion, such as sailors experience when they walk on dry land after too long at sea... p. 100.
