bookshelves: world-literature, short-story

Four short stories. Only light is like water has that touch of magic realism associated with Marquez. two scholars win a school prize and are rewarded with a row boat by their parents despite living on the fifth floor of a Madrid block. When their parents are out on Wednesdays at the movies, they use the light of a broken light bulb to float around the apartment. Bon Voyage Mr President, the title story is about an old former president of a Caribbean country in Switzerland, where he need medical care.
He sat on a wooden bench under the yellow leaves in the deserted park, contemplating the dusty swans with both his hands resting on the silver handle of his cane, and thinking about death.

Sleeping Beauty and the Airplane is about a beautiful woman sleeping in the adjacent seat to the author on a flight to New York. For me the most interesting story was "I only came to use the phone." This story is about a woman whose hire car breaks down and she seeks help in a nearby building, which turns out to be an asylum, she enters at the same time as a new influx of patients and is mistaken for being one of them.
