4.25* Me being me, of course I read it after reading the sequel (Faraway Wanderers - ÌìÑÄ¿Í); but it might've been a smart move, because Qi Ye is more well-developed in terms of story and characters than its sequel. While Faraway Wanderers did a beautiful job with Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing (him especially), its side characters were just... there, as a background. In Qi Ye, the side characters turned out to be complex and well fleshed out, and I really cared about most of them. I actually thought ZZS would be a more memorable one among them, but it was Helian Yi who stuck in my mind more (and also the warrior princess.)
The ending was extremely satisfying. The entire novel was well thought out, the buildup to the finale was really solid. Everything made sense. The romance made sense - it wasn't there for the sake of just being there. And it didn't overshadow the plot by any means.

"Not me reading this *after* I read the sequel... yeah. I'm going to miss Wen Kexing from Faraway Wanderers (he really carried that whole novel for me), but I know Zishu features a lot in Qi Ye & I'm curious about the whole story here (maybe I can finally find out what's up with the Shamans and Wu Xi), so hopefully Kexing's absence won't pain me that much."

"I'm somewhere between being intrigued enough to read on and wanting to switch to another book for a break... so far the tone is different from Faraway Wanderers - in a good sense, it really seems to be more well-developed, but that also makes it a much slower read. Meeting younger Wu Xi is such a treat. Beiyuan is... Beiyuan. What's his plan for his 7th lifetime anyway?"

"Wait, what does he owe him? Wasn't the Envoy the one to owe Beiyuan? #mildconfusion
I'm also still not sure what was up with the Envoy in the first place. Ugh, I need to ask someone to enlighten me... unless it's explained later on, in which case... better to avoid spoilers.
Also! Zishu is here, hello!"

"*chokes on tea* Wu Xi you sly fox, when Beiyuan finds out what this is... well, knowing Beiyuan, he'll be like "I'm too old for this... I'm tired, I'll go be horizontal for a while.""

"Zishu really is ruthless. No wonder he didn't even bat an eye when he saw WKX beheading someone in Faraway Wanderers. Also... why do I feel like Beiyuan's escape route won't be that easy? Would HY let him and WX go? I don't remember where they were when they first appeared in FW but I doubt it was the capital."

"I remember that string being silver... how did it turn into the red string of fate? Also... WX remembers?! I hope they address it again sometime later."
